“Still in creation” |
With this new and first creation together, we would like to investigate Mallorcan tradition from the ball de bot, the cossiers, the correfocs, the siurells… to all the figures and customs that remain rooted in our Island, while simultaneously analyzing and researching the concept of island and how, in our case, we live this. We want to carry out all this research through a queer lens.
QUEER.
Queer is one of the letters that make up the LGBTQIA++ acronym (regardless of what politicians say).
This expression of gender and person seems to me to encompass the entire collective and is an essential part. Queer challenges gender norms, binarism, the expression of oneself without limits and with all the imagination and genuineness possible.
We believe in a queer Mallorca, and we would like our island to also open up to this because it touches more people than we think, and Mallorca is home for all. We believe that what is known as queer is everywhere, and that is why we want to find it in our tradition and our roots. Through local and international pop music, through traditional clothing, mixing traditional dance and deconstructing the space it creates for us, reliving or seeing how some customs develop.
As islanders, it creates nostalgia and a sense of belonging, and we all want and have the right to belong.
ISLAND.
The concept of island, the concept of isolation, and how this affects us for better or worse, both in the world of music and dance, and how this can also be a very potent and strong medium to show that the Balearic Islands have a cultural agenda, a wealth, and a heritage that goes beyond sun, beach, and sangria.
The feeling of island and the desire to return or leave. I have always described Mallorca as paradise and prison because it captivates you and makes you stay, and/or at the same time, sometimes it hugs you so tightly that it doesn’t let you leave, and time seems to cease to exist. In the artistic field and in terms of queer expression, it can be limiting and needs fresh air.
TRADITION.
With the concept of tradition, we simply want to create a base for research, a castle to rebuild with very clear images that give plenty of room for reinvention.
Alejandro Fuster, in addition to being a dancer, is a drag queen, and the passion of his drag persona, Loli Pamboli, is to work with Mallorcan tradition, using the typical clothing and fabrics of our islands, as well as the movements and the ‘memes’.
Therefore, we also want to include drag performativity in this creation because it can be a perfect translator between tradition and queer expression.
